How would you like to make your own icons?

Written by Ed on October 31, 2008 – 11:00 pm -

Click Start | All Programs | Accessories
Select Paint
Click the Image menu and select Attributes
In the Width and Height fields, enter 32 for each value
Under “Units,” select Pixels
In Paint, add color, text, drawings or whatever you like. You can shrink a photo to 32×32 pixels to use as an icon, too.
When you’re finished, click File | Save As and give it a name with the extension .ico to identify it to Windows as an icon. You can change the icon for a folder or shortcut to use your custom icon.

Enable the onscreen keyboard in XP

Written by Ed on October 29, 2008 – 11:00 pm -

There are situations, especially with portable computers, when you might want to use an onscreen keyboard instead of a physical one. To pop up the onscreen keyboard so you can “type” with your mouse, just click Start | Run and type osk.exe Note that this also works with Vista.

Double byte character set characters appear corrupted in IE on XP

Written by Ed on October 28, 2008 – 11:00 pm -

If you browse a web site that uses Shift-JIS character encoding in IE, some DBCS characters may appear corrupted (that is, they don’t display as they’re supposed to). This happens when you’ve installed SP2 and another hotfix. There is a file you can download to fix the problem. For instructions on how to obtain it, see KB article 886677 at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886677/en-us

Microsoft pays you to use Live Search

Written by Ed on October 27, 2008 – 11:00 pm -

In an effort to get more folks to try Microsoft’s Live Search, in a world where 60% of the search engine market has been gobbled up by Google, a new feature called Search Perks lets you earn “tickets” that get you prizes such as music downloads, tee shirts, airline miles and merchandise. You can accumulate up to 25 tickets per day, but you have to use IE 6 or above and you have to sign up before December 31. Read more about it here:
